The challenge

Eclipse was the UK’s principal Black-led touring theatre company. They commissioned us to support their mission to address racial inequality across theatre, television, radio and digital media, calling out racism for what it is while celebrating the work they were doing to challenge it. For this project, we were going beyond press coverage – we were setting the stage for social change.

The work

We reached out to national press outlets and specialist titles, highlighting the need for an industry overhaul and Eclipse’s dedicated role within that movement.

Our work with Eclipse continued through our promotion of the company’s upcoming project, Revolution Mix, which would be touring performances telling real-life Black stories. We focused on securing features, previews and reviews, while achieving regional and national broadcast coverage on ITV and the BBC’s flagship programmes.

The impact

The Sunday Times declared that the “Oscars lack diversity but drama here is finally making progress”, while Arts Professional called out so-called “barriers” to diverse programming. Media coverage reached audiences of over 940 million, and our Revolution Mix campaign drummed up anticipation across more than 300 pieces of print, digital and broadcast coverage.

Ultimately, the first two tours sold out almost every performance to audiences of more than 15,000, achieving critical acclaim and proving that there’s a demand for Black-led stories in mainstream theatre. We had ignited a national conversation around diversity in the performing arts, informing the understanding of racism within the industry.

A collage of reviews and feature articles about Eclipse Theatre and Black British storytelling. Coverage from The Guardian, The Times Magazine, BBC, and other outlets highlights productions exploring Black British identity, history, and social change, including Black Men Walking and Princess & the Hustler. Images show performers on stage, people walking in rural landscapes, and portraits of artists, alongside headlines praising the work as powerful, inspiring, and socially significant.
